Registered RTRP

Dear Tax Professional,

According to our records, you’re required to pass the new Registered Tax Return Preparer Test. With the 2011 tax season behind you, now is the perfect time to test – while the law is still fresh. Scheduling your test is easy through your online PTIN account.

Why Test Now?

  1. Spots are limited: get your preferred date, time, and location by scheduling today
  2. Test while the tax law is still fresh - the RTRP test now covers 2011 tax law
  3. A public database is coming soon: get your credential before it launches
  4. Increase your credibility. Earn your RTRP credential before next filing season to impress clients and peers

Prepare for Test Day

Know what to expect before test day arrives with these helpful resources from the Tax Pros Test Section of the IRS.gov website

  • Test day video – learn what to expect at the test center
  • Test Tutorial – learn how to navigate the online resources in this simulated test environment
  • Candidate Information Bulletin – learn what to bring (and what not to bring) to the test center, view a list of study resources, and much more!

Don’t forget! The continuing education requirement began in 2012. You must obtain 15 hours of CE this calendar year from an approved CE provider. View the list of Approved Continuing Edication Providers. Take advantage of test prep classes from IRS-approved CE providers and get 2012 CE credits at the same time.

Consider becoming an Enrolled Agent. Enrolled Agents have unlimited representation rights and are exempt from the RTRP test. To obtain this higher credential, schedule an appointment for the Special Enrollment Exam instead. Get more information from the Enrolled Agents section of the IRS.gov website.

Note: If you live and/or work in a foreign country, you may disregard this message. We apologize that testing is not yet available outside the U.S. Once we have finalized the details for foreign testing, preparers living outside the U.S. will have a reasonable amount of time to take and pass the test.
